A study published in the Journal of The American Academy of Dermatology has highlighted mineral sunscreen as the most effective product to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. In a survey of 62 dermatologists, 96.8% recommended mineral sunscreen as the top choice for wrinkle prevention, while 95.2% identified it as the best option for tackling facial redness.

The study's author noted that mineral sunscreen is the gentlest form of sun protection, making it suitable for various skin types. Despite the affirmation from dermatologists, a 2023 survey revealed that only 13.5% of Americans use sunscreen daily, with 11% admitting they never apply it, risking their skin's health.
Dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, MD, explains that sunscreen protects against wrinkles by blocking harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage collagen and elastin, essential proteins for maintaining skin structure. When these proteins break down, fine lines and wrinkles can develop.
Mineral sunscreens work by reflecting UV rays off the skin's surface, while chemical sunscreens absorb these rays. According to Goldenberg, the ingredients in mineral sunscreens, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, provide effective protection without the irritation sometimes caused by chemical alternatives. Chemical sunscreens can also warm the skin, potentially leading to issues like melasma and hyperpigmentation.
Murad Alam, MD, co-author of the study, added that mineral sunscreens are particularly beneficial for sensitive and acne-prone skin, as they are less likely to cause allergies or clogged pores. Additionally, they remain effective longer in sunlight compared to chemical options.
Reapplication of sunscreen is crucial; dermatologists recommend reapplying every two hours, especially during direct sun exposure. They note that many people mistakenly apply sunscreen only on sunny days or during specific activities like swimming.
While mineral sunscreen is critical for preventing skin aging, dermatologists agree that it should complement other skin care products, including serums and creams, for optimal results.
