Kook Rak Choi, President of Sewang Textile Co., Ltd., attributes the rising global interest in Korean fashion to three key factors: historical craftsmanship, early adoption of digitalization and IT-based production systems, and a highly collaborative industrial ecosystem. He emphasized that Korea's expertise in textile craftsmanship has been honed over decades, allowing technicians to detect slight nuances in material handling.

The country's digital integration has contributed to a rapid and reliable supply chain, fostering high-quality product delivery. Additionally, the close collaboration among material developers, engineers, and R&D teams enables swift dissemination of new technologies, positioning Korea as a leader in smart textiles and innovative apparel.

Despite challenges posed by relocating production overseas, Sewang Textile has sustained its operations in Korea, maintaining its R&D headquarters while conducting mass production in Vietnam. Choi explained that this dual approach allows the company to prioritize innovation in Korea while focusing on volume production in Vietnam, with rigorous quality standards established prior to manufacturing.

In response to environmental concerns regarding the fashion industry's impact, Sewang has adopted eco-friendly practices since partnering with Patagonia ten years ago. The company holds certifications such as Bluesign and OCS and has embraced sustainable materials and practices, aiming to stay ahead of competitors in this essential area.

Sewang has built partnerships with several major global brands, owing to its over 40 years of expertise in managing an integrated production process from design to manufacturing. Quality assurance is facilitated by comprehensive documentation of production data and material traceability, gaining the trust of international brands.

Looking ahead, Choi noted that while the U.S. remains Sewang's largest market, there are plans to strengthen its presence in Europe and Japan, the latter being a significant focus for growth. The company plans to engage directly with brands for a larger portion of its contracts.

Innovation in product development continues, with new textiles and materials regularly introduced. Choi highlighted that the company's capabilities in automation, such as its smart production systems, have improved energy efficiency, water management, and overall sustainability, enhancing quality consistency across its operations in Korea and Vietnam.

Reflecting on his long career, Choi views the opening of the Vietnamese factory in 2017 as a pivotal moment in Sewang's growth. Looking forward, he hopes to establish additional overseas bases to expand global sales and is considering locations in regions like Egypt and Africa for future expansion.
