This pilot study explored the effects of a cream containing 3% lactic acid ferment lysate, VHProbi® MixP, on oily skin, a common dermatological issue. Over 60 days, 42 participants with oily skin applied the cream twice daily. Various non-invasive measurements tracked changes in sebum production, hydration, and skin texture at baseline, 30 days, and 60 days. Additionally, facial microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

By the end of the study, significant reductions in sebum levels (31.44%), porphyrins (44.60%), and pore size (25.03%) were observed. Improvements in hydration (63.68%) and skin texture (38.43%) were also noted. The microbial analysis indicated increased alpha diversity and changes in bacterial composition, specifically a decrease in Staphylococcus spp. and Cutibacterium spp., with an increase in Streptococcus spp.

The study concluded that using VHProbi® MixP may effectively reduce facial oiliness, enhance skin hydration, and adjust microbial community structure on facial skin. However, due to its single-arm design, further controlled trials are necessary to establish stronger causal relationships and investigate specific bioactive compounds in VHProbi® MixP.

Participants, aged 18 to 45, were selected based on predefined criteria, and all completed the study without dropouts. Measurements were taken using various probes for comprehensive data collection. The findings suggest that lactic acid ferment lysates could provide significant benefits for individuals with oily skin, warranting further research into its use in cosmetic applications.
