Co-founder Domingo Toledo launched the event 14 years ago to honor his mother, a breast cancer survivor, and to raise awareness for the disease. Proceeds from ticket sales partially support Agrupación George Papanicolaou, a local breast cancer awareness organization. "We made history here in Nogales," Toledo said, reflecting on the event's significance.
Originally from Nogales, Toledo was inspired by his experiences at Fashion Week in New York City, which motivated him to introduce a similar concept in his hometown. This year, eight designers showcased various outfits, aiming to reshape perceptions of the border. "I want to change the perspective that the world has about the border," he stated. "I want to transform this symbol of division into a symbol of unity."
The event held special meaning for sisters Melissa and Giselle Villegas, duo performers from Guaymas, Mexico. Having attended Border Fashion Week in the past, they sang two original songs during this year's event, positioned on opposite sides of the border wall. "As a duet carrying out this dynamic—singing, with one person on one side of the border and the other on the other—it felt almost magical to us," Melissa remarked.
Giselle emphasized the importance of events like these in fostering community at the border. "It’s very different from life on the border. It’s really defined by that drive—people setting out to get ahead and fight for their dreams. The best part is that beautiful communities form where everyone supports one another so that we can all achieve our dreams."
