With support from career resources and the Business of Fashion Society, Villanova students began their involvement two weeks prior to the event. Their tasks included interning with the main label, assisting designers, filming content, and gaining insight into the behind-the-scenes aspects of high fashion production.
Kevin Parker, the head of Philly Fashion Week, enlisted students from Villanova, Temple University, and Drexel University, as well as alumni, to promote the event. At just two years old, Philly Fashion Week is making strides to expand its audience and enhance its media presence, adopting the theme "From Runway to Street" this year.
Models walked through various locations such as the Fashion District, Reading Market, and City Hall to capture promotional shots. Interns followed the models, taking aerial shots from parking lots and finding optimal angles on the street. After the models completed their walk, the interns took their places, reflecting the behind-the-scenes effort that is crucial to events like these. In promotional images styled by Parker, Villanova students were depicted as models carrying clipboards, handbags, and dress racks while sipping Starbucks coffee.
On the Sunday following the promotional events, interns returned to gather content for the final model fitting. They engaged with designers to understand the inspiration behind their work, which often centered around themes of craftsmanship, confidence, and beauty. Designers expressed their goal of validating women’s beauty and enhancing their self-worth.
As the week progressed, interns remained active in Philadelphia, chiefly arriving toward the end. On Thursday, September 17, they participated in the Avantgarde Ball, which showcased the designs of Jeanette Limas, named Designer of the Year. Notable pieces included a striking red gown and a white gown that highlighted Limas's sculptural designs.
Villanova interns undertook various roles during the event, including interviewing local influencers, steaming garments, and photographing arrivals to create social media content for Philly Fashion Week and Maison's platforms.
The concluding shows on Friday and Saturday featured multiple designers, offering them the chance to display their work extensively. As models prepared with hair and makeup, interns documented the behind-the-scenes activity, capturing the effort that goes into such a large event. They enjoyed front-row seats during the runway shows, which included performances by K-Pop band Big Ocean.
Throughout Fashion Week, students collaborated across disciplines to learn, support local designers, and utilize Villanova’s resources to advance their careers and passions.
