ProTec Nutra has published findings from a study examining the effects of its Vollagen ingredient on adults using GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies. Vollagen is a plant-sourced collagen-formulation product, marketed as a plant-based alternative to traditional animal-derived collagen.

The results indicated that participants using GLP-1 therapies reported noticeable improvements in skin hydration, radiance, suppleness, and firmness after eight weeks of daily Vollagen consumption. Enhancements in hair health and shine were also noted.
The significance of this study is underscored by the rising popularity of GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies, which many users rely on for substantial and rapid weight loss. A 2026 study identified skin sagging, hair loss, and loss of facial volume as common concerns among individuals who lost over 20% of their body weight.
In an analysis of 4,114 GLP-1 users, a 3.9% hair loss event rate was recorded, indicating a 3.25-fold increased risk compared to a placebo group. Regulatory trial data for semaglutide and tirzepatide also highlighted hair loss issues, particularly among women, creating opportunities for nutricosmetic product developers.
The study involved 58 female volunteers who took 1,000 mg of Vollagen daily, divided into two capsules with meals. They completed questionnaires after four and eight weeks. Initial results after four weeks showed that 80.39% of respondents felt their skin was hydrated, and the same percentage noted its appearance. Radiance improved for 74.51% of participants, while suppleness and firmness were reported by 72.55%.
After eight weeks, 66.67% of participants stated their hair felt healthier and looked shinier. However, ProTec acknowledged the study's limitations, primarily that it was based on consumer perceptions rather than clinical trials, and that all participants were female, predominantly aged 40 to 49.
Gary Parker, Managing Director of ProTec Nutra, explained the study's purpose, stating that while Vollagen had existing evidence for general skin benefits, there was a need for specific data targeted at GLP-1 users. ProTec commissioned Ayton Global Research to facilitate the study, emphasizing that the firm aligns with ISO 9001 and ESOMAR, MRS, and MRC principles, which are critical for substantiating marketing claims.
