A recent study from Shiseido Co. indicates that men's skin may experience aging indicators, such as wrinkles, more severely than women's skin. Despite a growing interest in skin care among younger men in Japan, only about 20% currently use sunscreen, reflecting a notable lack of awareness about sun protection.

The research highlights that men's skin tends to produce more sebum due to male hormones but loses moisture more rapidly and possesses a weaker barrier function compared to women's skin. Additionally, men's skin has a lower antioxidant capacity, increasing vulnerability to oxidative stress and potential skin issues.
Koyo Koizumi, a researcher at Shiseido's Mirai Technology Institute, noted that lower skin care awareness and the stress of shaving contribute to men's skin problems. His findings reveal that men show higher levels of inflammatory markers associated with skin aging compared to women.
Another aspect of the study found that wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes develop earlier in men. Specifically, men have elevated levels of collagen-degrading enzymes and less skin firmness across all age groups, with the most significant differences observed in those aged 20 to 40. Men in their 30s to 50s were shown to have wrinkle volumes similar to women a generation older, with men developing eye wrinkles over a decade earlier than women.
Men typically experience inflammation from lower ultraviolet exposure levels than women, contributing to issues like wrinkles and dark spots. Continuous exposure to UV radiation without sunscreen may accelerate skin aging.
To mitigate these effects, establishing an effective skin care routine is essential for men. Recommendations include washing the face twice daily with a rich lathering facial cleanser to accommodate increased sebum production and using adequate moisturizer after washing or shaving.
Additionally, regular sunscreen application is advised throughout the year to combat UV damage. Koizumi emphasized the importance of even and consistent application for effective protection.
For men unfamiliar with skin care habits, developing a routine may seem daunting, but improvements in skin health can enhance overall motivation and well-being. Koizumi encourages men to explore skin care practices, highlighting the positive effects reported by those who have adopted them.
