Currently, D5 is restricted to a maximum concentration of 0.1% in rinse-off products, and this limit will be applied to leave-on products as well. D6 will also face the same 0.1% limit for both rinse-off and leave-on formulations starting next year.
Daniela Del Ciotto and Martin Mackenzie-Smith, owners of The Cosmetic Experts, noted that D5 and D6 have been popular in foundation products for their ability to enhance spreadability, provide a lightweight feel, and ensure excellent pigment distribution. They emphasize that these silicones evaporate after application, contributing to a smooth, non-greasy finish, long wear, and a soft-focus effect.
These ingredients are prevalent in both premium and mass-market foundations, especially in long-lasting formulations.
